A new home owned by Priscilla and James Head is featured in the upcoming issue of Log & Timber Home Living.Â
The home was awarded first place for home design in the 2,001-2,900 square feet category of the Jerry Rouleau Awards for Excellence in Home Design presented by the National Association of Home Builders Building Systems Councils.
Priscilla made the following statement about how her completely custom home was created.
We wanted a home style that would match the Middle Tennessee scenery. Over the years we had fallen in love with Tennessee’s Center Hill Lake and Silver Point Marina in particular. Prior to the cabin, we found ourselves spending more and more time on the lake and at our houseboat. We decided that we wanted a more permanent residence in Silver Point – a much slower pace than our typical lifestyle in Nashville.
Our Honest Abe Home is a blend of rustic country with some modern elements with sleek clean lines. I chose the cabin style to give the home a cozy feel, but did not want the style to be overly rustic and country. The feel and look turned out perfect. The home is nestled into a wooded area and blends well but offers a pop of color with the whitewashed exterior stain. The concept is open kitchen and living area with a large basement recreation area while keeping the bedrooms small.
The design has simple clean lines. I was involved in this build every day from design of the plans to fixtures to plumbing to small woodwork decisions as well as finishes and last minute adjustments. My mother and I worked together on developing a floor plan that encompassed must-haves like a dog bath in the garage, a wrap-around porch, a recreation/exercise room, a man-cave and a full-sized, walkout basement. Melissa Copas, an Honest Abe designer for more than 20 years, drafted the final plan for the two-story house.
The 1,530 square foot main floor has an open great room, kitchen and dining room. A breezeway connects the three-car garage to the main home through the laundry room, which has a half bath. The master bedroom suite has double walk-in closets and a full bath with a shower, separate tubs, a private toilet closet and dual sinks. Two private bedrooms with a shared bath and an open loft comprise the 900 square foot second story.
We wanted the log home feel on the outside of the home, but timber frame on the inside so we chose the log siding option. It has worked great. Lots of wood and character, but not too much for our taste on the inside. All accents in the home are stainless still or brushed nickel also adding a more modern element. The exposed vent and low ceiling in the kitchen help hold the cozy cabin feel with the contrast of sleek clean lines of the cabinets.
Adding a wood burning fireplace has also added to the character of the home with matching stone around the fireplace as on the island of the kitchen to blend the two rooms. The wrap around porch and walkout basement give tons of outdoor areas for entertaining and enjoying the view.
Painting the tongue and groove ceiling white added a sleek modern element as well as a great contrast from the rusting gray/brown stain on the beams and trim in the home. I don’t think the home would be as unique or modern without this feature.
