If there are ways to better care for and maintain your furnace, why not try them, right? The problem is, some of the advice you’ve heard isn’t accurate. Instead of cutting your bills, it could increase them — or worse.
Skilled HVAC professionals will tell you that there are many heating myths floating around that actually can cause problems. If you believe, for example, that space heaters are the best way to deal with cold spots in your rooms, you’re potentially setting yourself up for trouble. The truth is, cold spots can be a warning sign that there’s a problem with your heating system. Using space heaters will not only mask the root issue, but also may create a fire hazard.
The flip side of this bad advice is the notion that closing registers and vents in unused rooms — turning whole rooms into cold spots — is a good idea. While this tip is promoted as a way to save heating costs, it actually can waste money by causing pressure to build up in your heating system, potentially resulting in costly leaks.
The better you understand how to properly care for your heating system, the more comfortable you’ll be in your space and the more energy dollars you will save. To learn more about common home heating myths that could lead you to do more harm than good, take a look at the attached resource.
