Winesap or any sour apple makes a better pie.
Pie Filling
Mix the following and put into the prepared crust.
5 or 6 apples, sliced thin
1 t. cinnamon
1 T. butter
2 T. all-purpose flour
dash of ground nutmeg
My Pie Crust (one top and one bottom)
2 1/2 c. all-purpose flour
2/3 c. shortening
1/4 t. salt
4 T. sugar
Work by hand until it’s crumbly. Have 1/4 c. of ice water ready for what you might need for moistening. When mixed up take half the pie crust and roll out on a chopping block or biscuit board with 1/2 c. flour on the chop block. Take the rolling pin and roll it out as thin as you can. Roll it up on the rolling pin and put in it in the pie pan.
Place all the sliced apples in the pie pan. Make sure the apples really fill the pan good and high.
Take the other half of the pie crust on the chopping block. Roll as thin as you can. Roll it up on the rolling pin. Lay it over the apples. Trim the excess dough from the pie plate. Make your little dent places around the pan. Take s fork and make a design wherever you want to on top. Hope this works out. Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn’t. Ha, ha!
In 2001 WSM Radio collected recipes from music celebrities for Honest Abe’s Cookin for the Cure book that raised money to help local victims of cancer. Loretta Lynn submitted this recipe in her own words.
