The life of Clay County entrepreneur Doug Smith will be honored on Saturday, Sept. 29, when friends, family and community members gathered at Dale Hollow Dam Park for The Doug Smith Memorial 5K Walk/Run.
The annual event raised more than $1,100, which is being donated to Relay for Life.
“In 2011 one of Clay County’s beloved citizens lost a hard-fought battle to cancer,” said Josh Watson, one of the annual event’s organizers. “We want to dedicate this run/walk to his memory and to honor Dough Smith by donating the proceeds to the Relay for Life.”
Watson said that 55 people of a variety of ages participated in the run/walk. The overall winner was Eli Smith, Doug Smith’s grandson, with a time of 20:59. The overall winner in the female category was Abby Watson, who finished at 25:08.
The Doug Smith Memorial 5K Walk/Run is hosted by the employees of the companies owned by the late Doug Smith and his family, including Honest Abe Log Homes, Barky Beaver, GF Hardwoods, Happy Trucking, The Mill Storehouse, A Southern Marketplace Barn Sale, McFarland Creek Outdoors, Southern Timbercraft and Moss Sawmills.
This year’s event was organized by Smith Company employees Inez Price, Mary Pennington, Josh Watson, Quentin Moss and Jackie Trent.
